Human in the LoopJonathan Harrell’s Commonplace Book

I sat in the woods so long
I became something else.
My skin split open,
My bones grew roots,
My hair became a tangle of kudzu.
I looked into the water to see my reflection,
But I didn’t recognize what I saw.
My eyes were algae-covered wells,
My mouth a nesting hole.
When I tried to speak, no words came out,
Only the quiet whispering
Of a gentle wind through the trees.

A tranquil pond surrounded by tall reeds and lush greenery. The reflection of the vegetation is mirrored in the still water.
A reflection of trees and a figure in a shallow pool of water. The ripples distort the reflection, creating a peaceful and abstract image.
A cluster of small mushrooms growing out of a decaying tree stump, surrounded by moist wood and forest floor debris.
A close-up of a tree trunk with layers of lichen and small fungi growing in horizontal lines along the bark.
A large wooden sculpture of a giant foot lying in the forest, with intricate paneling detail on the wooden surface, surrounded by tall trees.
