Human in the LoopJonathan Harrell’s Commonplace Book

My bark.
My palimpsest.
I have a hundred souls inside me.
My skin is biographical,
Tattooed with strange cuneiform.

I can hear voices,
Taste their breaths,
Feel them moving down deep inside.
What will they remember
In all the long slow years
Of my growing?

Close-up view from underneath a large tree with thick, gnarled branches and dense green leaves; the bark is covered in carved initials and symbols.
A wide, sprawling tree with twisted branches and bright green foliage standing alone in a grassy clearing, surrounded by a dense forest.
